Emergency Fund Stress-Tester
Updated 2026-07-27 · Concept: margin, pooling risk with your future self
An emergency fund is not one decision; it is two years of small ones meeting a year of trouble you did not schedule. So this tool does not run your household once. It runs one hundred of you through the same twenty-four months (same savings, same paycheck, different luck) and colours each one by how it ended. The point is not the average. The point is the spread: how many of the hundred are still standing.
Predict first
With a $1,000 starter fund and $150 saved each month, how many of 100 households make it two years without falling into debt?
Pick an estimate, or skip to your own numbers.
After 24 months
n/a
The same 100 households, same year of trouble, saving $50 more each month
This is a teaching model, not measured statistics. Each simulated month draws one surprise: a 35% chance of a small $100 to 400 hit, 10% of $400 to 1,200, 3% of $1,200 to 4,000, and 52% chance of nothing at all. Those frequencies were chosen to make a rough-but-recognisable two years (a couple of car repairs, a dental bill, one bad month) and are not fitted to any dataset. Sizes are drawn evenly inside each range; the fund earns no interest. What is measured: 63% of U.S. adults said they would cover a hypothetical $400 emergency using cash, savings, or a credit card paid off at the next statement, and 55% had three months of expenses set aside, per the Federal Reserve's Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households in 2025 (May 2026). That $400 is where the amber line sits here. Teaching only, not advice; your own two years will not look like anyone's average.
There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.Proverbs 21:20
KJV. The wise keep a store; the fool consumes everything that comes in. A fund is not distrust of God's provision. It is the room that lets you absorb trouble without borrowing, and stay generous while you do. (On the opposite error, hoarding, see Luke 12 and the Barn Builder.)
