Is it wrong to make a profit?

The straight answer

No. Profit is the ordinary result of producing something worth more than its inputs, and Scripture treats that as good work rather than as extraction.

The capable woman of Proverbs 31 considers a field and buys it, plants a vineyard from her earnings, perceives that her merchandise is profitable, and sells what she makes. That is described admiringly. Lydia is a dealer in purple cloth (a luxury trade), and her household hosts the first European church. Jesus builds parables out of merchants, wages, tenants and returns without ever pausing to apologise for the setting.

Where Scripture becomes furious is about how a profit is taken. False weights are an abomination. Withholding a worker's pay overnight is condemned. Hoarding grain to raise the price on hungry neighbours draws a curse; selling the needy for a pair of sandals is named as the sin it is. Buyers who talk a price down and then boast about it get their own proverb (Proverbs 20:14).

The test is not the margin. It is whether the exchange was honest, whether the worker was paid promptly, and whether the gain came from creating value or from someone's desperation.

You have laid up your treasure in the last days. 4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies. 5You have lived in luxury on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 6You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous one. He doesn’t resist you.

CommandedWhat Scripture commands
  • Use honest weights, measures and descriptions (Leviticus 19:35-36; Proverbs 11:1).
  • Pay workers promptly and in full (Leviticus 19:13; James 5:4).
  • Do not make a profit out of a neighbour's desperation (Leviticus 25:35-37; Proverbs 11:26).
WisdomWise application, not command
  • Price for sustainability: a business that cannot pay its people is not generous, it is short-lived.
  • Count the cost before you build the thing (Luke 14:28).
FreedomWhere faithful people differ
  • Margin, business model, and whether to grow or stay small.
